Phase One of
GClub at Riverwalk Trust's
Beautification Project Complete

GCLub Logo

  • Go Green and promote our natural waterway.
  • Go Beautiful and install custom clay potted planters.
  • Go Downtown and support our Riverwalk Park.

These are the grassroots foundations of The GClub, dedicated to the greening of our Riverwalk Park and the creation of a more sustainable, more grounded downtown lifestyle.

The GClub serves as the launch pad for an ongoing series of projects and the inaugural project will be the installation of decorative clay pots throughout the park, spilling over with lush, tropical flowers and trees.

  • A matching grant for $22,500 was secured for the project through the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Business Capital Improvement Program (BCIP).
  • Bob Dugan and EDSA donated $10,000 in-kind services to get this project off the ground.
  • Terry Rynard of The City of Fort Lauderdale Parks & Recreation will oversee the installation and maintenance of the potted planters.

Members from the Riverwalk Trust and the Leadership Broward Foundation were joined by Genia Duncan Ellis and the Citizen's Volunteer Corp to plant and place the pots of Phase One along the Riverwalk on February 13, 2010; a day that will surely plant seeds for the betterment of our community.

110 Volunteers helped us complete the planting process in record time on this cool and breezy Saturday morning.

Riverwalk Trust & the Leadership Broward Foundation join forces to implement The GClub's Inaugural Potted Planter Project

Seven members of Leadership Broward Class XXVIII have enthusiastically chosen to dedicate their allotted community project time to the Riverwalk Trust. Throughout their nine-month leadership development program, these community leaders - “the project team” - will be responsible for implementing the GClub’s Inaugural Potted Planter Project.

The team helped obtain all materials necessary for the initial plantings such as donated trees, plants, soil, rock and fertilizer.

Under the Guidance of Gene Dempsey (with the City Parks & Recreation team) and Bob Dugan (EDSA), this group has stepped up to help make Riverwalk Trust's GClub plan a reality.

Leadership Broward Class XXVIII Project Team:

  • Brenda Cleaver, HOPE Inc.
  • Tom Coyle, Greenspoon Marder, P.A.
  • Laurie Menekou, City of Weston
  • Shawn Sackman, SunTrust
  • Drew Saito, CNL Bank
  • Cheryl Seinfeld
  • Dorie Vega, BankAtlantic

“In an effort to beautify the Riverwalk Park, our team enthusiastically chose to bring this project to fruition and add 25 potted planters along the Riverwalk,” said Drew Saito, Chair of the Leadership Broward team. The team has secured an in kind donation from 100% Landscaping for all of the soil. Riverwalk Trust Board Member Andrew Lester at Continental Group provided a portion of the plants that will bring the pots and the Riverwalk Park to life. “We are really looking forward to implementing this project, improving the aesthetics of the Riverwalk Park and contributing to the overall sustainability of Ft. Lauderdale,” said team Co-Chair Shawn Sackman.

Riverwalk Trust Steps Out with The City of Fort Lauderdale

In an important “first,” the Riverwalk Trust has received permission from the Fort Lauderdale City Commission to launch a pilot program that will bring year-round activity and events to our downtown along the Riverwalk Park.

The Riverwalk Trust will execute an annual event agreement with the City, rather than approaching the City Commission with each individual event in Riverwalk Park. That “umbrella” approach was a creative idea of Riverwalk Trust Executive Board member Courtney Crush. With the vision of Renee Quinn (Riverwalk Trust’s interim President/CEO) and implementation by Genia Duncan Ellis (Riverwalk Trust Special Coordinator/Liaison). the agreement has taken shape – making Riverwalk Trust the poster child for a new way to plan, activate and manage annual programs in the public right-of-way and on City land.

Understanding the unique potential for Riverwalk Park and other downtown venues to be a lively, year-round draw for residents and visitors, this trio researched, planned, coordinated and presented a comprehensive approach to activate the area. Riverwalk Trust will continue to work closely with the Fort Lauderdale Parks and Recreation Department to assure that specific programming, permitting and execution of the planned activities meet City criteria.

Courtney, Renee and Genia developed the concept for an annual event agreement that reflects the principles outlined in the city’s public realm plan, which is currently being formulated for the downtown. Through this effort, the Riverwalk Trust acknowledged the needs of our Downtown Community and defined an approach to meet those needs, while instilling greater efficiency and a stronger partnership between the Riverwalk Trust and City of Fort Lauderdale.

Among the many people that participated with this project, most important to its success are those that could see a vision and offered letters of support. They included Broward County Mayor Ken Keechl, Chris Wren of the Downtown Development Authority, Alan Hooper of Hooper Construction, Frank Herhold of Marine Industries Association, Bob Dugan of EDSA, JoAnn Smith of Fort Lauderdale Woman’s Club, Ron Centamore of Downtown Fort Lauderdale Civic Association, David Parker of Sailboat Bend Civic Association, Paul Kissinger of Fort Lauderdale Chamber of Commerce – Downtown Council, Dr. Joyanne Stephens of Florida Atlantic University, Doug Eagon of Stiles Corporation, and Wil Trower of the Fort Lauderdale History Center. Additional thanks go to Mayor Jack Seiler, Vice Mayor Bruce Roberts, Commissioner Charlotte Rodstrom, Commissioner Romney Rogers, and Commissioner Bobby DuBose. Riverwalk Trust Chairman Tom Vogel and the Executive Board have been a guiding force and among the trio's key supporters.

Watch for the upcoming fun and excitement. New programs will be rolling out immediately and each month we hope to be adding more reasons to Get Downtown!
