RELOCATE A TREE

Step 1: Identify the species and size of tree(s) to be donated.
This can be accomplished in the following ways:

To calculate the tree's size, measure the diameter of the trunk where accessible and estimate its height by comparing it to the height of a nearby structure or yourself. Write down these measurements.

Take photos of the tree's trunk, leaves and the entire tree and e-mail the measurements and photos to INFO@GORIVERWALK.COM.

Step 2: Timing
To successfully transplant the tree(s), proper preparation and pruning of the roots and some branches is required prior to transport.

Be aware that most trees require treatment at least six months in advance (and up to two years for older trees) in order for root pruning to be effective and to encourage survival. This is because the roots can grow five to six times the area of the canopy or branches.

What is root pruning?
The bigger roots are located closer to the tree and aid in grounding the tree to the soil, but they do not absorb the vital nutrients as well as the smaller ones. By properly cutting the larger roots, the growth of smaller roots is promoted. These smaller roots feed and absorb the moisture to nourish the tree after transplanting.

Step 3: Transportation process
Equipment needs to be able to access the tree(s). This is very important. In many cases, limitations on access of machinery (such as buildings, fences, utility wires, underground wires, etc.) may complicate the process or increase the costs.

Transportation modes include the following:

Land: Large trucks are required to move mature trees. These include coordinating convoys, controlling intersections and even the temporary removal of utility wires.

Water: Barges travel the canals.

Land/water: A combination of both land and water transportation.

Step 4: Planting and final installation

Planting: A hole would be dug and prepared prior to the transportation. The tree would be staked, irrigated and supervised during the crucial first six months to ensure its survival.
